[Class 72] To produce a spheroidized structure in the wearing surface of railway and tramway rails, the latter are quenched from a temperature above the critical range on heating at such a rate to a temperature below the critical range on cooling to produce a marlensitic structure and then tempered at 650‹C. or at a temperature above 650‹C. and below the critical range on heating to produce the desired result. The rails may be heated to above the critical temperature before treating it as described above and this treatment may be repeated once or more. The steel may also contain up to 1.5 per cent. of chromium, up to 3.5 of nickel or up to 0.6 of molybdenum. Specifications 324,686, [Class 72], 406,029 and 487,428, [Group XIX], are referred to.
