Modifying physical characters of metal.-In the manufacture of rolled railway and tramway rails, the interior and exterior portions of the mass of the rail are caused to have substantially uniform temperatures when the temperature is below the critical range and while the rails cool from above 500‹ C. to about 350‹ C. The cooling process is carried out by enclosing the rails in boxes or under covers or in chambers which may be brick-lined or artificially heated. The cooling down to the point above 500‹ C. may be carried out as described in Specification 18972/14. Specification 192,446 also is referred to.
