Tempering. - Metal bars of unsymmetrical cross-section, such as flanged rails, are maintained straight during cooling from rolling temperature by artificially cooling the thicker parts by immersing these parts in or sprinkling them with water or other liquid or blowing on them atomized liquid, vapour, air &c. This artificial cooling may be sufficient to give the bars a reverse curve, in which case it is interrupted before the bars attain room temperature so that a straight bar is finally obtained.
