Abstract

In the heat treatment of rails the rail is allowed to cool gradually after heating until substantially all of the metal of the web and the flanges has cooled to a temperature below the critical range, and then before the metal of the head has cooled to the critical range the entire rail is rapidly cooled by quenching in an aqueous medium. Before the major part of the head of the rail has dropped through the blue-heat zone, i.e. about 300 DEG C., the temperature of the rail is equalized by immersing it in a bath of molten lead for a few minutes. The rail is then transferred to a furnace, maintained at a temperature of about 538 DEG C. for a period up to 3 hours and then withdrawn from the furnace and cooled in air.
