Abstract

A process of hardening the heads of railway rails comprises cooling and examining the rails coming from the rolling mills, selecting rails having no surface defects, heating a layer on the surface of the heads to a hardening temperature and quenching, and finally heating the rail foot to a temperature sufficient to provide heat to temper the quenched layer, the temperature and duration of heating the rail foot being such that the finished rail-heads are straight or convex when viewed from the side. The rails may be preheated to 400-500 DEG C. before heating to the hardening temperature, and the rail foot may be heated to 375 DEG C. for 4 minutes for tempering.
