Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of railway and tramway rails, the rails after having been cooled through the critical range are subjected to a retarded rate of cooling the lower limit of the temperature range being below about 250 DEG C. and preferably about 50 DEG C. above the temperature of the atmosphere in which the rails are exposed for the final cooling. The upper limit of the retarded cooling range may be about 350 DEG C. or between the loss of redness in a dim light and 350 DEG C. The rails may be removed straight from the hot bed or may have been subjected to an accelerated cooling through the critical range following by a tempering below the critical range. For the retarded cooling, the rails are placed in a thermally-protected chamber.
