Abstract

In the manufacture of plates for cuprous oxide rectifiers, the plates are heated to a temperature below 1050 DEG C., and then cooled to a temperature between 300 and 700 DEG C., the cooling being effected so that it takes twice as long as the period normally required to permit the plates to fall to the desired temperature in the range above. The plates may be heated in one oven and cooled in a second oven. The plates may be cooled to the desired temperature and then maintained at that temperature for a period at least equal to the time taken to cool to that temperature. The atmosphere in the cooling oven may contain oxygen or be free from oxygen, e.g. an hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere may be used.
