Abstract

1,151,609. Heat-treating steel rails. USINOR. Oct.23, 1967 [Oct.24, 1966], No.48039/67. Headings C7A and C7N. Steel rails are heat-treated by immersing the still-hot rail emerging from the rolling mill e.g. at 900‹ C. into a fluidized bed of pulverulent material, e.g. powdered Cr, maintained constantly at 150-300‹ C, which is lower than the bainitic transformation temperature, to effect cooling without martensite formation. Preferably, the cooled rail is conveyed to a second medium, e.g. a similar bed or a furnace, maintained at 380-450‹ C. to ensure uniform isothermal bainitic transformation, and then tempered by re-heating it to 420-550‹ C., prior to cooling in calm air. The rail may be immersed inverted into the bed with its flange at the top and horizontal so that stagnant particles above insulate this part of its surface as described in Specification 1,131, 662.
