Abstract
In the treatment of railway and tramway rails by cooling them through the critical range by spraying with finely divided or atomised water, the water is delivered to the atomiser under such conditions of quantity and head that the rate of cooling through the critical range is increased by at least 50 per cent above that indicated in Specification 18972/14, [Class 72, Iron &c.], the head of water supply being reduced during the treatment to such an extent that when the temperature of the upper portions of the head of the rail has fallen to that desired, this temperature remains constant until the operation is complete. This cooling operation may be proceeded by a cooling operation sufficient to cool a desired depth of the head to below the critical range and then allowing the temperature of the rail to even out until the internal heat has reheated the cooled part to a temperature above the critical range. To minimise camber in the treated rail, the lighter parts of the rail may be cooled as described in Specification 192,446, [Class 72, Iron &c.], and the rail after cooling as described above may be further cooled as described in Specification 324,686, [Class 72, Iron &c.]. Specifications 1878/15, 8257/15, and 8258/15, [all in Class 72, Iron &c.], also are referred to.
