Abstract

549,540. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 29, 1941, No. 9605. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXVI] An arc shield or chute suitable for the circuitbreaker described in Specification 541,612, consists of a moulded cement-asbestos base having a portion of its surface' coated with a glaze formed by subjecting the surface to intense heating by an electric arc or an oxy-acetylene flame until the material is vitrefied. During the treatment, the base may be cooled periodically by immersion in water. The heat treatment may be combined with the treatment by heating in a reducing atmosphere consisting substantially of hydrogen, as described in Specification 544,842, [Group V].
