Abstract

550,819. Protective arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 2, 1941, No. 12723. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] [Alsoin Group XXXVII] A circuit-interrupter or lightning-arrester comprises circular blow-out means mounted between disc-shaped plates forming an arcuate arc path around the blow-out means, and a plurality of arc chutes arranged alternately between sections of gas-evolving insulating material and circumferentially around arc path. Each chute comprises side walls provided with interleaved ribs shaped and disposed to produce a graduallylengthening and narrowing zigzag passage transversely to the normal direction of arc-movement. The air circuit-breaker shown comprises a movable contact 12 and fixed contact 11 separable in a circular structure comprising four separate arcchutes 21 alternating with triangular inserts 23 ... 26 which are of horn fibre and have their basis 231 ... 261 progressively nearer the centre of' the circle. The space 32 between an arc runner 28 and the chutes 21 is lined with gasevolving material 29, Fig. 2, which is keyed at 30, 31, Fig. 1, to the inserts 23, 26. Similar keys 27 secure the chutes to the inserts. A blow-out coil comprising two parts 161, 16<SP>11</SP> wound in parallel planes, Fig. 2, about the magnet core 17, drives one end of the arc along runner 28 and against the chute entrances, assisted by gas evolved from lenses 29. The arc is then forced through the chutes by gas evolved from the inserts. The chutes each comprise an asbestos or ceramic arc-resisting member formed with ribs 36, 37 which inter-leave with those of the other member, and are shaped so as to form a gradually-lengthening and narrowing zigzag passage as in Specification 545,868, [Group XXXVII]. A vane 35 movable in a recess 34 in members 29, and with the contact 12. forces clean air into the space between the contacts. In a lightning- arrester, spaced fixed contacts replace the relatively-movable ones shown.
