Abstract
929,999. Heat treating welds. KEMWELL A.G. Dec. 29, 1961 [Jan. 6, 1961], No. 698/61. Class 72. A method of stress relieving, annealing, or normalizing welds comprises locating a body of exothermic mixture near to but not in contact with the weld, firing the body and allowing it to cool in situ, the body being spaced from the weld by an air gap of such dimension that the heat from the exothermic mixture brings the weld to the desired temperature. As shown, a butt-weld 2 may have two rings 7 positioned one on either side thereof, the rings having recesses supporting sections 8 of exothermic mixture and having an air gap 4 between the sections and the weld, a sleeve 9 then being placed over the mixture. The exothermic mixture may be alumino-thermic containing less than 5% silica and may have a backing layer of heat insulating material.
