Abstract
A method of annealing and stress-relieving welds comprises applying to the weld, or the metal adjacent the weld a body comprising an exothermic mixture, providing, as backing to the body, a removable, shaped structure of heat-insulating material surrounding the body but leaving an air space between the body and the structure, firing the exothermic mixture, allowing the fired mixture to cool in situ, and removing the structure and residue from the metal. The exothermic mixture may be aluminothermic containing less than 5% silica and, in the case of welding pipe, may be provided in the form of part-cylindrical shapes to form a sleeve round the pipe. The shaped structure may take the form of a lining to a box adapted to be fitted round a pipe.
