Abstract
<PICT:0986074/C6-C7/1> Welds are heat-treated by applying to the region thereof a body of an exothermic composition around which and spaced therefrom is a housing formed of flexible heat resisting material, the cavity thus formed being filled with a particulate heat-insulating material. After firing the exothermic composition the housing is closed and the composition allowed to burn out and cool in situ. The housing may be formed of asbestos or metal sheet or preferably of metal mesh, and the insulating material may be exfoliated vermiculite or pearlite. As shown in Fig. 1, weld 2 between pipes 1 is heated by exothermic sleeve 3. Struts 5 surrounding the weld are secured by straps 4, one end of flexible blanket 6 being secured to strut 5a, e.g. by eyelets. The blanket is then wrapped round the weld zone, possibly being secured to strut 5b, and its edges fastened by bands 7. The cavity so formed is then filled with particulate material, the exothermic body fired and the free end of the blanket brought forward to cover the opening between struts 5a and 5b. Specification 898,232 is referred to.
