Abstract

A method of treating metal objects to prevent distortion during heat treatment comprises in vesting the objects in a slurry of cement-like refractory material which is allowed to harden in situ to form a rigid coating round the object. The object or a number of objects, may be placed in a metal tray or mesh basket enclosed in a bag of impermeable material, e.g. polythene, and a slurry of 30% plaster of Paris and 70% silica powder poured in and allowed to set. The tray or mesh basket with the objects embedded in the refractory may then be heated and quenched. The quenching causes at least a part of the investment to be broken away and the objects may then be cleaned.
