Abstract

In a process of heat-treating welds formed in the jointing of a pipe to another pipe, a flange, T-connection or other similar component, the treatment being carried out by applying an exothermic composition to the exterior of the pipe in the region of the weld, there is provided within the pipe or pipes and near to the weld area one or more closures which substantially close off the weld area from the open end or ends of the pipe. The closure plates may be made from metal or heat insulating material such as asbestos board; alternatively they may be formed of granular or fibrous heat-insulating material bonded with a water soluble binder such as gum arabic, in which case they are readily removed by flushing.
