Abstract

781,317. Welding by fusion. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 3, 1956 [Jan. 4, 1955], No. 165/55. Class 83 (4). A unit which with a group of similar units makes a bung for use when welding pipe lengths end-to-end to form the external pipe of a concentric pipe assembly comprises two spaced sectorshaped pads which together with the walls of a pair of concentric pipes enclose a sector of an annular cavity and means for feeding a gas to and from the cavity. The pads 12, 13 are each formed of two layers of sponge rubber 14 between plates 26, 28 mounted on a frame 10 having tapered ends 17, 18 to facilitate insertion and removal. Inert gas is supplied through a pipe 19 and a perforated curved pipe 22 to the space between the pads and escapes into a perforated pipe 24 having an open end on the outer side of the pad 13. In forming a concentric pipe assembly after pipe lengths have been welded end-to-end to form the inner pipe, an outer pipe length is positioned with its end staggered from the welded joints of the inner pipe. The units are positioned and a second outer pipe length is placed over the units. An inert gas is supplied to the cavity between the pads, and the outer joint is welded. Concentric pipe stainless steel heat exchanger units may be fabricated in this way in which case argon shielded arc welding is used.
