Abstract
<PICT:0958019/C3/1> A welded metal structure is stress-relieved on-site by temporarily mounting on the structure electric resistance heating elements in the neighbourhood of the welds, together with thermal insulation and/or reflectors to retain the heat thereabouts. Ends 1 of two pipes joined by butt welding are heated by resistance elements 8 (see Division H5) enclosed by sintered alumina cylinders 5 supported on wrappings of asbestos tape 7, the power supply to the heating elements being controlled by distributed thermocouples. Application of the method to a seam welded between two plates is also described, Fig. 3 (not shown), and numerical data on temperature gradients are given.
