Abstract
A process for the stress relief of welds in steel pipes of such diameter and wall thickness that they have a weight of at least 45 lbs. per foot length, comprises applying to the weld metal an exothermic mixture of such composition that when burnt in free oxygen it generates 3000 to 6000 B.T.Us. per pound, the mixture being used in such amount that the temperature of the weld metal is raised at least to the critical temperature, firing the mixture and allowing it to cool in situ. A sleeve of heat-resisting material may be inserted between the weld metal and the exothermic composition. Specification 924,881 is referred to.
