Abstract

A method of producing a chain roller comprises forming the roller of mild steel, producing by any known method a diffusion alloy of at least one other element on the surface of the roller, heating and quenching the roller to produce a martensitic core and an austenitic surface layer and hardening the surface layer by work or ageing. The additional element is preferably chromium but may be Mn, Si, B, W, Mo, Ta, V, Ni, Co, Zr, Ti, U or Be. Immediately below the surface layer is a martensitic layer containing some of the additional element.
