Abstract

Anhydrous alkali polysulphides are obtained by reacting molten sulphur with an anhydrous alkali sulphide, for example, sodium sulphide, produced by gaseous reduction of alkali sulphate. The reaction may be effected in a directly heated closed iron vessel provided with a stirrer, advantageously in an indifferent atmosphere such as nitrogen. The mass is maintained in a fused condition during reaction, the heat of reaction being in general sufficient for this purpose. The homogeneous melt may be allowed to settle, or filtered through a hot filter, and then cooled with exclusion of air. A statement of prior art relates to the production of alkali polysulphides by the reaction of sulphur on a monosulphide or hydrosulphide in alcoholic or ethereal solution, or by heating hydrated monosulphide with an excess of sulphur in a current of hydrogen.
