Abstract
Sulphide ores of iron, such as pyrites, are roasted with a limited supply of oxygen not substantially diluted with inert gases, whereby ferroso-ferric oxide, and free sulphur which can be condensed from the circulating gases, are obtained. The oxygen needed may be obtained by the electrolysis of water, the hydrogen also produced then serving for reduction of the ferroso-ferric oxide. The gases issuing from the reduction furnace, after removal of water, are recirculated with addition of fresh hydrogen which is preheated as by an electric arc or by addition of a little oxygen. Heat is conserved by employing the issuing hot gases to preheat the incoming gases.ALSO:Sulphide ores of iron are rotated with a limited supply of oxygen obtained by electrolysis of water, and the hydrogen also produced by the electrolysis then used for reduction of the ferroso-ferric oxide. The gases issuing from the reduction furnace, after removal of water, are recirculated with addition of fresh hydrogen which is preheated as by an electric arc or by addition of a little oxygen, and by heat-interchange with the outgoing gases.
