Abstract
Sulphide ores of iron, e.g. iron pyrites or pyrrhotite are desulphurized by treatment with sulphur dioxide at a gradually increasing temperature which does not exceed 950 DEG C. The hot gases containing sulphur dioxide first liberate the more mobile portion of the sulphur and the resulting ferrous sulphide reacts with the sulphur dioxide in the hottest part of the furnace or in a separate furnace to give porous magnetic oxide of iron and free sulphur. The latter is passed to condensation chambers and the iron oxide is subjected to the usual electromagnetic separation process in order to concentrate it, when it may be briquetted. The sulphur dioxide may be obtained by burning sulphur or pyrites in air in burners of the usual type, but the resulting hot gases should not contain more than one per cent of oxygen. The reaction is facilitated by the regulated admission of steam.
