Abstract
Sulphur dioxide free from arsenic is obtained from arsenical pyrites by subjecting the pyrites to an oxidizing treatment at a temperature such that the arsenic escapes without any substantial combustion of sulphur and introducing the so treated pyrites into a roasting furnace, the arsenic containing gases from the first treatment being introduced into the roasting furnace at one end thereof and leaving at the other end in a countercurrent direction to the charge as a current of sulphur dioxide gases practically free from arsenic. The first step may be conducted at 350--450 DEG C. with the aid of heated air which has served for the cooling of the stirring arms of the roasting furnace and may be carried out in a chamber built on top of the roasting furnace, the bottom of this chamber being the usual drying hearth of the roasting furnace. The roasting furnace may be of the type having superposed hearths and air-cooled stirring arms.
