Abstract

In the reduction of sulphur dioxide to sulphur by means of a reducing fuel bed, the sulphur dioxide containing gases are introduced into the bottom of the furnace at a high initial temperature, e.g. approximately 1000 DEG C., and above 900 DEG C., and the progressive increase of temperature through the bed is avoided by the introduction of further quantities of sulphur dioxide at higher levels of the fuel bed, e.g. spaced at one-seventh and one-third of the height of the fuel bed. The main portion of the sulphur dioxide is preheated by any suitable method, preferably by admixture with air followed by heat exchange with the hot exit gases from the reduction furnace, prior to injection into the reduction furnace. The sulphur dioxide added at points up the reducing bed may also be preheated, if desired, to about 400 DEG C.
