Abstract
Oxygen-free titanium carbide particularly for use as an anode in the electrolytic production of titanium and preferably containing a small excess of carbon, is produced by melting a titanium oxide, such as titanium dioxide, and carbon in an arc furnace either (1) with a volatilizable flux of an alkali or alkaline earth metal chloride or fluoride and casting the product as the anode, or (2) by heating to 2000 DEG C. and pumping till production of carbon monoxide ceases or in a hydrogen atmosphere. The carbide produced by this second method is then ball-milled to pass through a screen of 325 mesh (Tyler standard), treated with dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acid to dissolve any contaminating metal thereby picked up, washed, and dried. It is then formed into a plastic mass by the addition of methyl cellulose and water, extruded through a die, and fired to effect sintering. The addition of chloride or fluoride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal reduces the sintering temperature from 2400 DEG C. to 2000 DEG C. If insufficient carbon is present to ensure that all the titanium oxide is reduced, small amounts of carbon, silicon, or chromium may be included in the mixture prior to sintering, these additions being eliminated during sintering by volatilization as low valency oxides.
