Abstract

A shaped carbon article is produced by admixing finely divided body material consisting primarily of substantially pure carbon with an aqueous emulsion of carbonisable binder material comprising molten pitch, asphalt and/or bitumen, at least partially drythe mixture, shaping the at least partially dried mixture and baking the shaped body. 30% of binder may be used. The body material may comprise one or more of anthracite, natural or artificial graphite, pitch or petroleum coke, or carbon black, optionally together with one or more of coal, metal, abrasive, or lubricant. The emulsion may comprise one or more of the emulsifiers agaragar, carrageen, tragacanth, methyl cellulose, and water-soluble carboxylic acids obtained by treating coal with nitric acid. The emulsion may also contain anthracene oil and coal tar. Carbon black may be added to the emulsion first followed by other forms of carbon. Drying may be effected by heating and/or centrifugal action in the latter part of a mixing process in a rotary drum. The dried mixture may be pressed hot or cold. Baking may be effected at 1200 DEG C. The baked body may be graphitised. Shaped articles specified are pressure regulating discs and rings, stuffing rings, coupling rings, plates, bricks, tubes, eggshaped briquettes, arc-lamp and other electrodes, carbon pins for batteries and irradiation lamps, brushes and microphone carbons.
