Abstract

A graphite body, e.g. an electrode of an electric discharge device, is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to a glowing temperature until all non-graphitized carbonaceous materials such as hydrocarbons, are removed. Lamp black or amorphous carbon may be mixed with a suitable binder and graphitized by means of the Acheson process. The graphite may then be pressed to the desired shape and heated in air to 1200 DEG C. by means of induced high-frequency currents, or by the passage of an electric current therethrough, or by the use of an electric resistance or gas-fired muffle furnace. The body is surrounded by a blue glow during the treatment, and emits incandescent particles when all non-graphitized material is removed.
