Abstract

195,610. Finspongs Metallverks Aktiebolag. March 29, 1922, [Convention date]. Resistances, self-supporting.-Rotating electric furnaces for treating zinc powder are provided with rod-shaped heating elements so constructed that the resistance of those portions A, C of the element to which the current is supplied is different from the resistance of the part B of the element situated within the furnace. Preferably the resistance of the part inside the furnace is at least two-thirds of the total resistance. Figs. 1, 3, and 4 show different constructions of elements, the desired result being obtained by variations in the cross-sectional area. In a modification, an element of uniform external diameter is made hollow over the part B. In another modification, an element of uniform cross-sectional area has the part B made of material different from that used for the parts A., C. The part B may be made from carbon powder leaving a relatively great amount of ashes and the parts A, C may be made from pure carbon materials such as graphite, retort graphite and petroleum coke. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 9017/87, 24909/03, [both in Class 39, Electric lamps &c.], 29715/10, 6952/13, 16299/13, and 168,018, [all in Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity].
