Abstract
<PICT:0396088/III/1> In order to increase the conductivity of the terminal portions of a silicon carbide resistor to facilitate making contact therewith, these portions are impregnated with silicon or a metal. A crucible 2, preferably a carbon block, is adapted to be heated almost instantaneously to a very high temperature by passing a heavy current therethrough. The electrodes 3 between which the block 2 is placed may be of graphite so that they are of lower resistance than the block. The end of the silicon carbide rod 4 is positioned in the crucible, the rod preferably being preheated, and its end is surrounded with a predetermined quantity of silicon, silicon alloy, or other impregnating material such as aluminium, nickel, iron, cobalt, chromium, or mixtures of two or more of these metals in the solid state. The temperature is raised very rapidly, the silicon being absorbed into the rod almost simultaneously and the excess metal being removed from the crucible by vaporization. The crucible and the end of the rod are still further heated for a short interval, e.g. from 5 to 30 seconds to about 2500 DEG to 2,800 DEG C. in order to produce a further decrease of resistance of the impregnated portion of the rod. The entire heating period may be from one to five minutes and should not greatly exceed ten minutes. The rapid heating may alternatively be effected by inserting a removable crucible into a previously-heated high temperature furnace, or high-frequency induction may be employed. From 2 to 20 per cent of aluminium may be added to the silicon to increase the strength of the junction between the rod and the impregnated end. The strength of this junction may be increased by using a deep crucible so that the rod becomes heated for some considerable distance. The impregnating material then rises to a greater height in the central part of the rod than near the outer surface, giving a conical junction between the treated and untreated part of the rod. Specification 239,216, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 365,081 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts), [Group XXXVI].
