Abstract
550,379. Carbon brushes, resistances &c. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 21, 1941, No. 15015. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1940. [Class 90] [Also in Group XI] Carbon .brushes, resistance plates, crucibles and other carbon bodies consisting of graphite or prepared by heat treatment of non-graphitic carbon to produce a substance consisting wholly or mainly of graphite have the hardness, density and electrical conductivity increased by heattreating at a non-graphitizing temperature in a hydro-carbon gas atmosphere to deposit non- graphitic carbon within the pores of the body. In an example, a mixture made from lampblack, coke, charcoal, graphite &c. is bonded with pitch, tar, resins &c., made into slugs and carbonized by heat, pulverised, bonded again and again pulverised, made into a bar or plate under pressures varying from 1,000 to 20,000 pounds per square inch and carbonized at temperatures up to 1,204‹C. Graphitization is then effected by heating to temperatures between 1648 and 3037‹C. Thereafter the treatment in hydrocarbon gas is effected. Gases mentioned are methane, propane, butane, Pennsylvania natural gas and volatilized oils, petroleum, waxes &c. The Figure shows an electric heating arrangement for carbon plates 10.
