Abstract

208,572. Thornhill, E. B., and Anderson, H. G. S. Aug. 14, 1922. Drawings to Specification. Extracting.-In a process for producing sponge iron, a mixture of iron ore and carbonaceous material is passed through a chamber in which a reducing atmosphere is maintained and is heated by radiation from a source of heat extending above and out of contact with said mixture which is supported on a bed of non-heating material such as carbon, and is agitated to expose fresh surfaces to the radiated heat, the heating being to a temperature, e.g. 950‹ to 1000‹ C., in sufficient to cause the fusion of the reduced iron. The mixture on the bed of carbon is agitated by rabbling devices consisting of rotary arms provided with rabble blades of carbon. The bed mav be constituted by carbon in a divided condition, and the ore &c. may be heated by tubes in which gas burners or electrical heating means are mounted. The carbonaceous material, before mixing with the ore, is heated to eliminate moisture and reduce the volatile content therein. The process is carried out in apparatus described in Specification 2.08,573, [Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity].
