Abstract

Iron or iron alloys having a low carbon content are produced from pig iron or an iron alloy by granulating the raw material to provide more or less spherical grains and then heating the grains to a temperature below their melting point in an atmosphere adapted to decarbonize the grains without any substantial oxidation of the iron itself. The decarbonizing may be carried out in the presence of a suitable oxidant such as haematite or limestone which produce decarbonizing gases on heating and heated to a temperature of 750-1100 DEG C. or by mixing the grains with iron ore and introducing a reducing gas such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide into the furnace in which the operation is carried out. The grains may be maintained in motion during the operation, e.g. in a rotating internally-heated furnace or by causing them to move downwardly in a vertical furnace in counterflow to the hot gases. The heating of the grains may be carried out in vacuo in an induction furnace or electrically either using the charge as a resistance, a neutral substance such as sand, lime or quartz then being added to the charge, or by using electric resistances disposed within the furnace. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 referred to the treatment of carbon-containing metals and alloys but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
