Abstract
Active carbon in moulded form is obtained by treating organic material, e.g. sawdust, peat or lignite, preferably powdered, with known activating or carbonizing agents, such as zinc chloride or phosphoric acid in the case of chemical activation or dilute sulphuric acid in the case of gas activation and heating it to a temperature between 100 and 200 DEG C. while stirring, until the carbonized mass assumes a kneadable and plastic form when it is moulded under pressure, and baked till hard, preferably in the presence of oxygen, at a gradually increasing temperature so that the shapes do not sinter or melt. The material is then gas activated at high temperature or activated by heating to a temperature of 450 to 600 DEG C. The die of the moulding press is preferably heated to about 100 DEG C. to avoid interrupton of the heat treatment. Excess activating agent may be washed out with water or acid. If desired, the moulding process may be assisted by the addition of known binding agents, preferably during the heating and mixing process and when the mixture has attained some degree of plasticity. Activating agents may also be added at this stage.
