Abstract
490,008. Fumigating. SEWELL. T. Feb. 4, 1937, No. 3276. [Class 81 (i)] Furniture and the like from verminous dwelling houses is disinfected by treatment in a closed chamber, at a temperature not less than 77‹ F. with carbon dioxide to cause the insects to breathe actively, followed by treatment with sulphur dioxide to destroy the insects. The apparatus in one form, comprises one or more sealable vans V each fitted with a valved inlet C<1> near the top for introduction of CO2, two valved inlets S<1> at the bottom corners for admission of heating gases and SO2, and one or more valved ventilating outlets O at or near the top. Carbon dioxide may be supplied from a cylinder C mounted on a weighing machine C<2> or may be generated from solid blocks or by chemical reaction ; hot air from a heater A<1> and SO2 from a generator S are supplied by a fan A. The generator S may be fitted with a gas burner to ignite a mixture of sulphur, potassium nitrate or chlorate, and manganese dioxide and may also be fitted with an electric or other hot plate to vaporize a liquid insecticide. A sealable hut or other receptacle may be used in place of a van, and the gas-generating apparatus may be arranged to be portable.
