Cooling discharged materials. - In apparatus for cooling incandescent coke, of the type in which the cooling gas is passed in a closed circuit through the coke and through a heat exchange device, fresh air is continuously admitted through an inlet valve to combine at once with any combustible gases given off by insufficiently distilled coke within the container, in order to avoid the formation of an explosive mixture when a considerable quantity of air is suddenly introduced, for example when fresh coke is added or when cooled coke is withdrawn. An outlet valve may also be provided to regulate the pressure of the circulating gases. The gases may be circulated by means of a pump or fan or by convection. The coke container a is connected by a pipe e to a steam generator b through which the hot gases are circulated by a blower c. The air-inlet valve h is preferably adjustable and is disposed on the suction side of the blower, and the adjustable outlet valve i is arranged between the coke container and the steam generator, where the circulating gases are above atmospheric pressure. The two valves can be operated simultaneously, either automatically or by hand.
