Abstract

<PICT:0770930/III/1> High volatile cokes which tend to agglutinate during calcination are pretreated by contact with hot gases containing a small quanitity of oxygen before being carbonized to expel all volatiles. A unitary apparatus comprises vertical preheater 10 and calciner 12 connected by a conduit 14, the coke, particularly petroleum-coke, flowing continuously downward. Combustible gas and air are burnt in the calciner flues 26 and air or other oxygen-containing gas supplied by a fan 44 mixes with the combustion products before delivery to the top of the preheater. Some of the gases drawn off by a fan 50 are recycled through a conduit 48, and steam or water may be added through a line 56. A rotating drum with louvred side walls may be used as the preheater. The maximum preheating temperature is about 800 DEG F. and an oxygen content in the gases of about 3-6 per cent by volume or rather more may be employed.
