Abstract

In a process for the recovery of sulphur as sulphur dioxide from anhydrite by heating the anhydrite in the presence of carbon in an oxidizing atmosphere, at least a major proportion of the carbon is employed in the form of petroleum coke having a sulphur content of not less than 5 per cent by weight. The heat for the reaction may be provided by the combustion of a carbonaceous fuel of petroleum origin which has a high sulphur content and the combustion gases mixed with the sulphur dioxide produced in the process. The carbonaceous fuel may comprise petroleum coke, fuel oil or acid sludge. Cement may be produced as a by-product in the process if clay is mixed with the anhydrite and petroleum coke.
