Abstract

A continuous self-baking electrode for a furnace is formed by progressively baking an electrode paste comprising dry carbonaceous substance in granular form mixed with a liquid binder, the dry substance containing less than 30 per cent of particles with a grain size between 0.1 and 2 mm. The dry substance is petrol coke or pitch coke in granules at least 20 per cent of which are also larger than 2 mm. in size. The liquid binder comprises hydrocarbons such as pitch or tar, and the electrode is baked during use in an electrolytic furnace for the production of aluminium.
