Abstract
1,214,078. Arc electrodes. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 29 Jan., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 46525/68. Addition to 1,160,556. Heading H5H. A cylindrical carbon electrode has a core comprising a major proportion of a carbonaceous filler a carbonaceous binder selected from tars, pitches and pastes of anthracite and pitch and from 1 to 25% by weight of one of the following materials; alkali metal carbonate, oxide, halide, chromate, silicate, aluminate or aluminosilicate, which in use ionize to increase the electrical conductivity of the arc. The filler is selected from crushed coke, crushed calcined anthracite or crushed graphite and is present in a proportion of from 55-90% by weight. The carbonaceous binder is tar, pitch or bitumen having properties defined in the Specification. The outer carbon cylinder is preferably pure carbon and has grooves or depressions in its inner surface to anchor the core.
