Abstract

309,605. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Electrolytic furnaces.- A cell for the electrolysis of a fused substance has one or more electrodes consisting of a heap of carbonaceous material e that can be continuously renewed. In general a mixture of pieces, varying from the finest grains to pieces of the size of a walnut are used. The heaps are confined partly in conducting shafts b. The shafts are conical to avoid clogging. Cooling pipes f are fitted in the shafts and walls. The floor is dome-shaped if the cell is narrow to prevent contact between the electrodes. An aluminium furnace described employs a central hearts electrode and an electrode formed by an annular heap of carbonaceous material.
