Abstract

In the conversion of solid carbonaceous materials by treatment with hydrogen in deficiency in presence of a dispersion medium of aromatic or naphthenic character, as described in the parent Specification, the dispersion medium comprises normally solid fusible bituminous substances free from paraffinic or olefinic ingredients or a solution thereof in oils substantially free from paraffinic or olefinic ingredients. The primary bitumen produced in the process may be used as dispersing medium. 100 parts milled coal are mixed with a solution comprising 35 parts primary bitumen and 65 parts of a coal-tar fraction of 220-300 DEG C. boiling range. The mixture is treated with hydrogen in amount of 5 per cent by weight of the coal at 300 atmos. and 405-410 DEG C. The thickly - liquid primary bitumen solution obtained is distilled up to 300 DEG C. and the 220-300 DEG C. fraction mixed with part of the undistilled solution and used again. 100 parts of soft bitumen are mixed with 100 parts lignite and the mixture is homogenized at 90 DEG C. and pumped through a hot pump with 5 per cent of hydrogen into a reaction system. 76 per cent of the original coal is converted into a hydrogenated product.
