Abstract

Coal is mixed with a blend of oils containing low boiling oils, i.e. those having a boiling range below 200 DEG C., the mixture is subjected to low temperature heat treatment, e.g. at temperatures up to 700 DEG C., and the middle oils derived from this treatment are converted into low boiling oils in any known manner, e.g. by a catalytic treatment at 150--300 DEG C. as described in Specifications 445,727 and 445,757. The blending oil should contain not less than 5 per cent of low boiling oils and the quantity used should be not less than one-third the weight of the coal. A suitable mixing oil can be derived from the output of the process. An improved coke is obtained by first grinding the coal with the heavy fractions of the blending oil and then adding the light fractions. 300 grs. coal are ground with 150 grs. of a blend of oils containing one - sixth by weight of a fraction boiling below 200, one - half by weight of a fraction boiling between 200--360 DEG C., and one-third by weight of an oil boiling over 360 DEG C. The mixture is distilled to coke and the distillate, fractionated to separate the fraction boiling between 200 and 360 DEG C., is treated catalytically as described in Specifications 445,727 and 445,757, e.g. by contact with porous bauxite impregnated with aluminium chloride The gases produced in the treatment are washed to recover vapours by treatment with an oil made up of fractions of specified distillation ranges.
