Abstract

Hydrocarbon motor spirit is obtained by destructively hydrogenating coal or the like, fractionating as by distillation, and submitting the 170-200 DEG C. fraction, alone or mixed with other hydrocarbon oil or hydrogenizable vapours, to the action of hydrogen or carbon monoxide or mixtures thereof, e.g. water gas, in presence of a hydrogenating catalyst and at 400-600 DEG C. and at least 20 atmospheres, whereby the phenolic constituents are converted into aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons. The product may be mixed with one or more of the fractions boiling below 170 DEG C. For example, 100 lb. of bituminous coal is hydrogenated at 250 atmospheres and 420-450 DEG C. in presence of a tin catalyst, and fractionally distilled; the 5,5 lb. 170-200 DEG C. fraction containing 30 per cent of phenols is treated with hydrogen at 400-600 DEG C. and 200 atmospheres in presence of a molybdenum catalyst; 4,65 lb. of hydrocarbon is produced, and is blended with the untreated 0-170 DEG C. fraction. Or the 5,5 lb. 170-200 DEG C. fraction is mixed with the 23 lb. 200-300 DEG C. fraction and similarly hydrogenated, and washed with dilute alkali.
