Abstract
Petroleum distillation residues, especially those obtained by cracking, are freed from dispersed and dissolved impurities causing sludging on standing or addition of other liquids, by diluting with pressure distillates or pressure distillate bottoms or liquids of analogous composition, and separating the sludge produced. Preferably a raised temperature up to 150 DEG C., and 50-300 per cent by volume of the diluent, are used. In examples, 1 litre of Dubbs residue is mixed with 1,0 or 2,5 or 3,0 litres of pressure distillate bottoms and heated in the water bath for 24 hours. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the separation of sludge from petroleum residues by liquids which dissolve the oil but not the sludge matters. Further diluents specified are petroleum fractions containing few aromatics, such as benzine, kerosene, and gas oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
