Abstract

Rubber is given antimicrobial properties by incorporating in the mix before vulcanization a mixture of salicylanilide and an optionally halogenated mono- or dihydroxydiphenyl methane or dihydroxydiphenyl sulphide. A small amount of tetramethylthiuram disulphide or zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate may be added. The ratio of salicylanilide to second component of the mixture may vary between 1:10 and 1:1. The preferred amount of mixture is 3% by weight of rubber but the amount may range from 1 to 10%.ALSO:Rubber is given antimicrobial properties by incorporating in the mix before vulcanization a mixture of salicylanilide and an optionally halogenated mono- or dihydroxydiphenyl methane or dihydroxy-diphenylsulphide. A small amount of tetramethyl thiuram disulphide or zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate may be added. The ratio of salicylanilide to second component may vary between 1 : 10 and 1 : 1. The preferred amount of mixture is 3% by weight of the rubber but the amount may range from 1 to 10%.
