Abstract

Organic peroxides having the general formula <FORM:1103373/C2/1> in which Ar represents an aromatic radical, which may be substituted in the reactant alcohol or hydroperoxide with a further group <FORM:1103373/C2/2> and correspondingly in the final product with a further group <FORM:1103373/C2/3> R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which may be the same or different, and X is an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, are prepared by the reaction of a compound of the formula <FORM:1103373/C2/4> with a compound of the formula <FORM:1103373/C2/5> wherein Ar, X and R are as defined above, Y represents the group -OH or -OOH and Y1 represents the group -OH if Y represents -OOH or vice versa, the reaction being carried out in the presence of perchloric acid and in the presence of more than 0.1% by weight of water in the reaction mixture during at least a part of the period needed for the reaction. Examples describe the production of alpha, alpha1-bis (tert. butylperoxy)-p-diisopropyl benzene.
