Abstract

Crude acetone obtained by the acid decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide is purified by continuously treating the acetone during rectification with an aqueous sodium peroxide solution, the amount of sodium peroxide being sufficient to oxidise the reducing substances contained in the crude acetone. The supply of sodium peroxide solution is conveniently effected at a level in the rectification column above that at which the crude acetone is supplied. The concentration of sodium peroxide solution is preferably not greater than 5% by weight, and the amount of solution supplied is normally 0.5 to 2% by volume of the crude acetone charge. In the Examples (1) an acetonecumene mixture containing 40% by weight of acetone, (2) a 50% aqueous solution of acetone and (3) a charge containing 40% acetone, the remainder being cumene, alphamethylstyrene and traces of water, are all treated with a 1% aqueous sodium peroxide solution (the crude acetone in each case having been obtained by the acid decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide). Specification 800,763 is referred to.
