Abstract

Slime-forming micro-organisms in water &c. used in paper-making &c. or in the textile industry or in distilling are reduced or destroyed by adding to the water, continuously or batchwise, 5 to p 100 p.p.m. of one or more esters of a haloacetoacetic acid of the formula <FORM:0874064/VI/1> where X is a halogen atom, and R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical which may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic, e.g. with a halogen atom or a nitro-group substituent, or is a functional group containing oxygen.
