Abstract
Peroxides are eliminated from ethers by adding phenothiazine, or a derivative thereof, to the ether, heating the mixture to boiling point and subsequently distilling off the ether. It is preferred to use 1.1 to 1.6 moles phenothiazine per equivalent of active oxygen in the ether. In the course of the purification treatment the phenothiazine is oxidized to the corresponding sulphoxide which may be converted back to the phenothiazine by treatment with Zn or Fe in acetic acid. Suitable derivatives of phenothiazine are the alkyl substituted compounds. Examples relate to the purification of dioxan and tetrahydrofuran.
